Beginner 5K Training 2022
Calling all cancer survivors*! Come join our newest free 5K training program with a special twist! There will be a weekly walking meet-up at Chris's Coffee & Custard that will also include a review of a handout with evidenced based information and topics geared specifically toward cancer survivors. The program will be led by Morgan O’Leary, a senior level dietetics student at Virginia Tech and avid runner and triathlete, inspired by her aunt who walked throughout her cancer treatment. It will last for six weeks and topics will include physical activity, nutrition, and food safety. There will also be an opportunity for everyone to sit down for one-on-one nutrition counseling.
It is not required, but we do encourage program participants to register for our end-of-program goal race, the Keystone Community Center 5K on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Program coaches will be attendance of this event to cheer on our graduates and celebrate your tremendous accomplishments!
This program is FREE but registration is required. Complete link in event page to register. You will also be asked to complete a pre- and post- program survey utilized for the nutrition education internship assessment. Your information will be confidential and used only for program evaluation purposes.
*This program is open to anyone interested in training for their first 5K as nutrition guidelines for cancer survivors are applicable to the general population
Organized group meetings take place on Fridays at 8:30am at Chris's Coffee & Custard. Participants can also join us on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at our Community Run/Walk events to get in their workouts (coaches are not guaranteed at those workouts). Attending workouts is not mandatory! You do not need to a certain fitness level to come to our group workouts. Any fitness level is welcome and encouraged. The distance you cover in the time that we meet is totally up to YOU. There is no expectation from us that you are faster, stronger, or more fit than anyone else. Fitness and health is person-dependent so no two individuals running or walking the same pace have the same needs. Do what is best for you. We are here to support whatever that may be for you.
